The Birupes genus is a relatively recent and rare addition to the tarantula hobby, captivating enthusiasts with its stunning appearance and mysterious origins. Native to Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, the most well-known species in this group is Birupes simoroxigorum—a striking tarantula renowned for its vibrant blue legs, metallic pink carapace, and overall iridescent coloration that makes it look almost unreal.
Discovered and described in 2019, B. simoroxigorum quickly became a collector’s dream due to its beauty and rarity. It is a fossorial (burrowing) species, preferring to spend most of its time in its underground retreat. Like many Asian tarantulas, it is an Old World species, meaning it lacks urticating hairs and may exhibit defensive behavior when threatened. Though not typically aggressive, its speed and skittish nature make it better suited for experienced keepers.
Due to its limited availability and protected habitat, Birupes species are often expensive and difficult to acquire ethically. Conservation and responsible breeding are crucial to ensure their continued presence in the hobby. Despite their elusive nature, Birupes tarantulas are prized for their unmatched beauty and are considered one of the most visually stunning species in the entire tarantula world.
